With investment in new cycleways and ambitious targets to increase journeys made by bike from Transport for Greater Manchester, cycling is set to gather further momentum over the coming years. The University provides supporting infrastructure and works with networks of engaged people to boost the number cyclists, help tackle congestion and pollution and make Manchester a healthier and more pleasant place to live, work and study.

Whether you are an existing cyclist or someone who is just considering giving it a go, we provide and support a range of facilities and measures to help make cycling to work an attractive and accessible form of transport.

Cycle community

  • Bike User Group UMBUG is a friendly and welcoming community made up of both experienced cyclists and those that would like to give cycling a go.
  • Buddy scheme Contact an experienced cyclist for advice, support or even a guided cycle.
  • Cycle September Each year we take part in this fun, global competition to help more people realise the benefits of riding a bike.

Cycle facilities

  • Cycle shelters There are eight cycle shelters on main campus and one on north campus for staff and postgraduates to use.
  • Cycle parking There are over 3,000 cycle parking facilities on main and north campus, including a number of secure cycle shelters available for staff and postgraduates to use.
  • Showers There are over 65 showers available to use across main and north campus.
  • Cycle repair stands and pumps There are three cycle repair stands on main campus and one on north campus. There are also two rapid pumps on main campus and one on north campus.

  • Cycle to Work scheme Save money on the purchase of bikes and accessories or just safety equipment only.
  • Access to bikes Find a bike shop, recycled bikes and bike hire in Greater Manchester.
  • Cycle training Sign up for free cycle riding and maintenance sessions for beginners and experienced cyclists.
  • Cycle registration scheme Free bike security marking service.
  • Subsidised lock scheme Qualify for a discounted lock by registering your bike on the University’s cycle registration scheme.
  • Cycle mileage rate Claim a cycle mileage rate of 20 pence per mile for business journeys.

  • Bike maintenance Cycling UK has produced 5 guides on simple bike maintenance, designed to be downloaded to your phone for reference wherever you travel.
  • M Check Check your bike is safe to ride in 11 steps with tips from Sustrans.
  • Commuting basics A video from British Cycling giving some tips on the basics of commuting by bike.
  • Cycle maps TfGM have online and downloadable maps showing cycle-friendly routes to help plan your journey.
