Sustainability course units and careers

We are committed to embedding sustainability into all teaching and learning as part of our wider environmental strategy.

University College for Interdisciplinary Learning (UCIL)

Our University College for Interdisciplinary Learning (UCIL) gives students the opportunity to incorporate sustainability course units into their degree programme.

UCIL offers students several environmental sustainability units – including the popular Creating a Sustainable World: 21st Century Challenges and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) – to supplement a degree programme.

Units like this give students the opportunity to explore the United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in more depth and learn how the University is contributing to them through its teaching and research.

The course units are delivered online and involve interactive activities, videos and discussion boards. They are made accessible to all undergraduate students and offer valuable knowledge and skills building including teamwork, communication and critical thinking.

Ethical careers

Environmental and sustainability work is an area that attracts many graduates. It encompasses a wide range of technical and non-technical jobs in industry, local and national government, and voluntary organisations.

Entry for environmental and sustainability work can be highly competitive. The University’s Careers Service provides guidance for students who are interested in an environmental career.

You can also find the University’s careers policy, which excludes tobacco companies. This policy was reviewed in 2020.
