Recycling in halls


The following items can be recycled in halls:
Blue recycling bags and bins (please no plastic bags):

  • Newspapers
  • Magazines
  • Cardboard and drinks cartons.

Brown recycling bags and bins (please no plastic bags):

  • Glass bottles and jars
  • Plastic bottles
  • Cans
  • Tins
  • Aerosols
  • Silver foil.

Green bins (selected halls only. Food can be put into these bins in plastic bags as these are removed during processing):

  • Food waste
  • Egg shells
  • Pasta
  • Fruit
  • Vegetables
  • Tea bags
  • Coffee
  • Raw or cooked meat, fish and bones
  • Dairy
  • Bread and cakes.

Give It Don’t Bin It

During May – September residents in halls will receive a Give It Don’t Bin It pack explaining how to donate any unwanted items to charity. Across Manchester, this has raised over £250,000 for the British Heart Foundation. Please make sure all donated items are clean as these are for a charity. Please donate items as you would wish to receive them.

Red British Heart Foundation donation points:

  • Clothes
  • Shoes
  • Books
  • Handbags
  • DVDs/ CDs
  • Small electrical appliances.

Large blue containers marked ‘Give It Don’t Bin It’:

  • Large furniture
  • Electrical items
  • Pots/Pans.

Food donation points:

  • Any unopened, non-perishable food items in tins/packets.

You can also donate sharp items, such as knives to designated knife donation bins inside reception areas as well. Please cover these and deposit in the locked bins in reception areas.

Living in private accommodation

The Residential Life Team works closely with Manchester Student Homes, who have a dedicated Good Neighbours Team to support you living in the community. To order recycling bins, check when your bins should go out or find out what you can recycle visit Manchester City Council.
