What is Green Impact?
For the third year in succession, the University is taking part in a national project – a departmental environmental accreditation scheme. This has been really successful and we are now looking for more teams. Why not join other staff and students in this scheme aimed at celebrating and recognising environmental achievements whilst also providing you with a framework to improve your environmental performance.
How does it work?
Teams are given a workbook with bronze, silver and bonus criteria to help you create a more sustainable workplace. Each criteria is simple, clear and easy to implement. You will be supported with resources, examples of good practice from within the University and from the other 45 universities taking part. All participating teams will be awarded for their efforts and depending on their performance will be awarded a Bronze, Silver or Gold standard.
Who can take part?
Teams of staff take part and staff can organise their own teams. Teams do not have a maximum size limit and can be based upon your department, your building or who you work with. Any member of staff can lead on the project on behalf of their department, all they need to do is sign the team up, meet as many criteria as they can, then submit the workbook. All actions will be fully supported by the Green Impact team. We can support you in persuading your line manager and senior colleagues to agree to sign up. Please contact us if you need this help.
Anyone can act as the staff team lead for completing and submitting the workbook, and you can engage your students to help you. In 2010/11, 15 teams across the University won awards and this year we are looking to increase this number. Specific criteria are being introduced this year for laboratories so laboratory based staff can now take part too.
Why should I take part?
- Green Impact is recognised on the sustainability section of the Annual Performance Review (APR)
- The University is committed to environmental sustainability and Green Impact will help meet our carbon reduction targets of 40% by 2020
- The auditing process as part of Green Impact gives students the opportunity to become trained environmental auditors
- You will be given a bespoke workbook designed to help you make your department more environmentally friendly
- You will receive recognition for environmental actions already in place
- All teams will be invited to an awards ceremony to be rewarded for taking part
