New £1.2m hybrid bus fleet hits Oxford Road

hybrid bus

The University-subsidised Oxford Road Link service is upgrading its whole fleet, thanks to a government grant and investment from the operator Bullocks.

Four brand-new, state-of-the-art Volvo hybrid buses are to be placed on the route. Look out for the first one on Friday 18 March! All four will be running by 25 March. These buses switch off when stationary (so don’t be alarmed, the driver hasn’t stalled!) and travel in electric mode at low speeds. Tests have shown a 35% saving in CO2, which equates to 82 tonnes annually. This saving forms part of the University’s Carbon Management Plan.

All the new buses are double-deckers which means extra capacity is available to ease the crush at peak times (please do use the upper deck if you are able to). Remember, on production of a University ID card, staff and students can travel for free between campuses (between the Students' Union stops and the Sackville Street Building stops). However, if you do not have your ID card, you will have to pay the standard fare: 80p for a single journey or £1.50 for a day ticket. The service also provides a valuable link to Piccadilly Rail station, improving access for train travellers.

The University is serviced by a vast number of buses, making the bus a convenient option for people travelling to the University from across Manchester and beyond.

The following tools will help you plan your bus journey
