The University of Manchester is committed to reducing its environmental impact and actively supports and promotes travel by sustainable means.

To this end, the University has a Travel Plan (PDF) which aims to put together a package of measures that increase the travel options available to staff and students. The aim is to discourage single occupancy car journeys by providing a range of suitable and more sustainable options, such as walking, cycling, public transport and car sharing.

These pages outline the range of travel options available.

To support this project a Sustainable Travel Planner has been appointed. Andrew Hough can be contacted at:

Projects to reduce the environmental impact of University related travel are also included in the Carbon Management Plan (PDF)

What Do We Mean By Sustainable Travel?

Transport is a significant source of CO2 emissions. Every time we travel in any form of vehicle, be it car, train, tram, bus or airplane we make a contribution to climate change as a result of the CO2 emitted.

By choosing to travel more sustainably you can make a huge difference, significantly reduce your personal carbon footprint and help reduce the impacts of climate change. It also sets an example for others in the local community to follow.

But sustainable travel doesn’t just benefit the environment. Active travel such as walking and cycling can be a great way to build exercise into your day. Travelling by sustainable means can also save you money!

Sustainable travel options can be considered as follows:

Cycling and Walking

No Emissions! Great for the environment and also great for your health

Bus, Train and Tram

If your journey is too far to walk or cycle, public transport is usually the next best option

Car Sharing

If you do have to travel by car, could you give someone a lift or ride as a passenger yourself?

The following are unsustainable options and should be avoided wherever possible:

Single Occupancy Car
Travel

Car travel accounts for more CO2 emissions than any other form of domestic transport

Air Travel

For longer distance journeys there may be no other option, but flying within the UK is strongly discouraged
