Between April 2009 and February 2010, the University participated in phase 5 of the Carbon Trust Higher Education Carbon Management Programme. The main focus of the programme is to reduce CO2 under control of the University including:
- Academic buildings
- Fleet vehicles and essential staff travel (University owned)
The main output from the programme is a 5 year Carbon Management Plan which was endorsed by the Board of Governors in March 2010. This sets out details of the University’s carbon footprint and planned measures for reducing carbon emissions over 5 years. The main target from the plan is to reduce the University’s absolute carbon footprint by at least 40% by 2020 from a 2009 baseline of 85, 419 tonnes of CO2. This plan is managed by a Carbon Management Team chaired by the Associate Vice-President for Compliance, Risk and Sustainability and compromised of academics, Estates, Finance and students.
